The ecological integrity of Bulgaria's sea water has become a focal point for the Ministry of Environment and Water, as highlighted by Minister Manol Genov during a recent meeting in Sozopol. Genov stated, "Based on the inspections we've carried out, I can say that the sea water in Bulgaria is currently perhaps among the cleanest in Europe." He acknowledged the ongoing challenges posed by marine pollution and emphasized the importance of addressing them.
In the Burgas region, the only settlement lacking a wastewater treatment plant is Ahtopol, a situation the minister aims to rectify. Despite potential funding opportunities, administrative hurdles have stalled progress on this project. Genov assured that all pollution reports are thoroughly investigated, with regular sample collection conducted in collaboration with the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water.
In light of recent environmental incidents, such as the fire at a plastics factory in Sredets, Genov expressed concern over the effectiveness of regulatory measures. He called on local authorities to take greater responsibility, especially during the summer months when wildfire risks are heightened. The minister concluded by emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts to safeguard Bulgaria's natural resources.
