The Municipality of Hersonissos is moving forward with an important innovation aimed at enhancing waste management and reducing municipal fees through a new "Pay As You Throw" system. Set to be piloted in 2025, this initiative is designed to encourage responsible waste disposal among the area’s 33,000 tourist beds.
The "Pay As You Throw" model will charge residents and businesses based on the amount of waste they generate, promoting recycling and minimizing landfill contributions. This approach not only aims to foster a cleaner environment but also seeks to alleviate the financial burden on local taxpayers by linking waste management costs directly to waste production.
Officials believe that this program will not only improve the sustainability of Hersonissos but also set a precedent for other municipalities looking to adopt similar waste management strategies. As tourism continues to play a vital role in the local economy, the municipality is committed to ensuring that its environmental practices keep pace with growth and development.
