A controversial plan to establish new yacht routes around Jeju Island is facing mounting criticism from environmental groups and residents, who warn it threatens a vital dolphin sanctuary and the region's commitment to sustainable tourism. The proposed route, intended to boost maritime tourism, would cut through areas known as critical habitats for Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins.
Conservationists argue that increased vessel traffic from luxury yachts will lead to underwater noise pollution, disrupting the dolphins' communication and feeding patterns. There are also significant concerns about the risk of collisions with the marine mammals and potential water pollution from the vessels. These factors, experts state, could cause long-term damage to the local dolphin population, which is a key natural attraction for the island.
The conflict highlights a growing tension on Jeju between economic development and ecological preservation. Proponents of the route see it as a necessary evolution to attract high-spending tourists and diversify the island's offerings. Opponents, however, contend that true sustainable tourism must prioritize protecting the very natural wonders that draw visitors in the first place. They are calling for a comprehensive environmental impact assessment and the exploration of alternative routes that avoid sensitive ecological zones. The provincial government now faces increased pressure to balance these competing interests, as the decision will set a precedent for how Jeju manages its fragile coastal ecosystems amid growing tourism demands.
