A bitter disagreement has erupted between marine scientists and local authorities over how to protect wealthy tourists at a new high-end resort along South Africa's coast. The luxury destination, often compared to a Club Med, is drawing international visitors, but its location near shark-heavy waters has sparked a heated debate about safety measures.
Researchers argue that traditional methods like culling or drum lines are ineffective and harmful to the ecosystem. They advocate for non-lethal solutions, such as sonar buoys that detect large sharks and alert lifeguards, or electric barriers that deter predators without killing them. However, local officials, under pressure from resort operators and tourism boards, favor more aggressive tactics. They point to the need for immediate, visible protection to reassure guests paying premium rates.
The standoff has stalled any unified action. Meanwhile, the resort continues operations with basic netting and spotter helicopters, but experts warn these measures are insufficient. "You cannot guarantee safety with outdated tools," one marine biologist stated. "But officials want quick fixes to avoid scaring off the money."
Environmental groups have joined the scientists, warning that lethal methods could disrupt the local marine food chain and harm endangered species. The resort itself has remained largely silent, caught between the demands of safety and conservation. As the summer season approaches, the pressure to find a compromise grows. For now, the sharks remain, and so does the deadlock.
